The 2020 "video and entertainment" mobile app rankings are out! According to the latest survey report released by mobile app market research firm Sensor Tower, for the period from January 1 to December 15 this year, the data show that Douyin/TikTok ranked first worldwide with 960 million downloads, with the largest numbers of users in India, Brazil and the United States. The streaming platform Netflix ranked second, and YouTube ranked third.
Beyond downloads, in the annual ranking of "entertainment" mobile apps by revenue, the short-video-focused Douyin/TikTok app took first place with estimated global revenue of US$1.26 billion, with overall revenue up 590% from the previous year. Of this, iOS users contributed the highest share, at 88.3%. By country and region, users in the United States and Türkiye contributed the most.
Sensor Tower's analysis indicates that total spending by users of the two major mobile platforms, Apple's App Store and the Google Play Store, on entertainment apps came to approximately US$5.82 billion in 2020. Douyin/TikTok alone accounted for nearly 50% of total global user spending, an impressive ability to generate revenue. The top five video and entertainment mobile apps worldwide by revenue, ranked from second to fifth by amount, are: YouTube, Tencent Video, Disney+ and the iQIYI app.
