In brief
WhatsApp was the most downloaded app overall in Q1 2017. Facebook led Google Play, while Facebook Messenger topped the App Store; the two stores featured largely similar apps in their rankings.
Apps are like the soul of a smartphone; without good applications, even the best phone cannot reach its full potential. But which apps do people use most often? Overseas market research firm SensorTower conducted a survey and released the rankings of the most downloaded applications in the first quarter of 2017.
PhoneArena reported that, according to SensorTower’s report, in the first quarter of 2017, across Google Play and Apple’s App Store, Facebook was the most downloaded application on Google Play, while Facebook Messenger was the most popular app on the App Store. In the overall rankings, however, WhatsApp appeared to be even more popular, overtaking Facebook to become the most downloaded app.
The apps in the rankings were largely similar across Google Play and the App Store. Messaging apps included WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram and Snapchat, alongside Bitmoji, an emoji customization app that was very popular in the United States. There were also some interesting observations: Google Maps, for example, appeared among the App Store’s ten most popular applications, indicating that many iOS users still liked using Google Maps alongside Apple’s Maps.
