In brief
Project Catalyst will help iOS development teams bring their apps to macOS. Twitter says it got its app running on the Mac within days and can update all three versions with the same team and little additional staffing cost. Developers will be able to try the tool at WWDC alongside MacOS Catalina.
As expected, Apple officially unveiled a tool at WWDC that makes it easier for developers to bring iOS apps to OSX: “Project Cataylst.” Its predecessor was last year’s Marzipan, and it will be compatible with Xcode developer tools. This means teams developing iOS apps can easily adapt their interfaces for macOS and develop apps for both mobile devices and desktop computers.
Twitter is among the first to try this new tool, which also means that, more than a year after discontinuing its official app, Twitter will return to the Mac platform. Twitter says Project Catalyst enabled it to get “Twitter running on the Mac within days,” and the same team can now update the Twitter apps for iPhone, iPad and Mac together without much additional staffing cost. Details about the new Twitter app for Mac are still limited, but it would be no surprise if it ends up looking exactly like the mobile version.
Project Catalyst will be made available for developers to try at WWDC alongside MacOS Catalina.
