Apple announced that its App Store generated more than US$28.5 billion in revenue last year (all amounts below are also in US dollars), setting a new record and representing year-on-year growth of 40%. Apple will receive a 30% share, or approximately $8.5 billion. Revenue from China grew the fastest, rising 90% year on year.
Nintendo’s Super Mario Run, which launched just last month, recorded 40 million downloads in its first four days. Meanwhile, revenue from subscription-based apps such as Netflix and Tinder rose 74% year on year to $2.7 billion. Apple said that on January 1 this year, the App Store generated $240 million in a single day, setting a new daily record, while sales during the December holiday period reached $3 billion.
The App Store currently offers approximately 2.2 million apps for download and has generated more than $60 billion in revenue since its launch.
