As the year draws to a close, awards season is here again. Apple recently announced its App Store Best of 2020 winners, recognising 15 apps and games. Wakeout! won iPhone App of the Year. The app brings gentle exercise into home offices and classrooms, helping users maintain their physical and mental wellbeing while staying at home during the pandemic. Zoom, the video conferencing app that also became hugely popular during the pandemic, was named iPad App of the Year.
Mac App of the Year went to Fantastical, which helps users create daily schedules and incorporates weather information to support their planning. Disney+ was named Apple TV App of the Year, an unsurprising result given the popularity of series such as The Mandalorian. Apple Watch App of the Year went to Endel, which uses music, timers and other features to help users fall asleep, making it popular among people with insomnia.
In gaming, Genshin Impact won iPhone Game of the Year. Although its stunning graphics and distinctive open-world gameplay have attracted many players, it has also faced widespread criticism over allegations of copying The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, making its win somewhat surprising. Legends of Runeterra was named iPad Game of the Year. Set in the League of Legends universe, this strategy card game supports cross-platform battles and is popular among many LoL fans.
