Apple’s lowered financial forecast sparked concern among investors, but the company still had good news to announce today: App Store spending exceeded US$1.22 billion during the 2018 year-end holidays and US$322 million on New Year’s Day 2019, both record highs.
According to Apple’s figures, between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve 2018, users worldwide spent on the App Store more than US$1.22 billion (approximately NT$37.7 billion), while spending on January 1, 2019 alone exceeded US$322 million (approximately NT$9.9 billion). Both figures set all-time records, bringing the App Store to a strong close in 2018 and a promising start to 2019.
Apple recently announced that the App Store helped drive its services revenue to an all-time high during the year-end peak sales season. Several categories within Apple’s services business also set new records, including the App Store, Apple Music, cloud services and Apple Pay.
Apple noted that games and self-care software were the most downloaded and subscribed-to apps during the year-end holidays. Globally, multiplayer games such as Fortnite and PUBG ranked among the leading game downloads over the holiday period. Productivity, health and fitness, and education apps also attracted consumer attention in early January 2019.
