In brief
Daniel’s app helps Hong Kong residents book hourly domestic helpers, generating HK$1 million in monthly turnover. It selects a helper in advance based on district and working hours, supports middle-aged women returning to work, and has expanded into a range of home services.
Many people in Hong Kong have messy homes, but laziness leaves them reluctant to tidy up or cook themselves, so they turn to outside help. Daniel, who was born in the 1990s, studied law in the UK and previously worked in the US. He knew all too well how messy a home could become when living alone and wanted someone to tidy it up. After returning to Hong Kong, he decided against entering the legal profession, which he found dull, and instead pursued something creative: an app designed to make life easier for people reluctant to do household chores—an app that helps Hong Kong residents find hourly domestic helpers to tidy, clean and cook, generating monthly turnover of HK$1 million.
Tidying and cleaning naturally depend on hourly domestic helpers. Daniel initially recruited helpers through community centres. They had all undergone retraining at the Vocational Training Council, and most were middle-aged women with children to look after. They took on jobs to earn extra income while their children were at school. This approach gave the platform access to professional housekeeping help while also helping middle-aged women return to the workforce.
“Our app is a little simpler. We select an hourly domestic helper for the customer in advance, based on their district and the working hours required. Other platforms work like posting a job advertisement: a dozen or more people may call to say they want the work. With us, only the one hourly helper who accepts the booking calls the customer.”
The service began with hourly housekeeping and has since expanded to include hourly home visits for massage, repairs, pet services, laundry, care and supervision, and elderly care. Registered users have reached 20,000, with repeat customers accounting for 70%; they regularly book housekeeping every week or every two weeks. The platform also cleans many short-term rental properties, taking several hundred such bookings each month.
The founder firmly believes that “services” will be the most profitable business in the future. He is now developing a gift-giving service concept, such as buying gifts and keeping them tucked away for people who have no time, to surprise the recipients.
