In brief
To attract and retain app users, keep features practical and simple, test demand, offer free downloads, make advertising transparent, explain benefits clearly, encourage social sharing and avoid overly frequent updates.
Every day, new applications (apps) appear, but successfully attracting attention takes skill. According to research by US firm Quantcast, out of every 1 million apps on iOS or Google Play, only 1,000 have more than 50,000 users. Recently, someone shared seven keys to app success online.
1. Keep It Practical and Simple
Developers should consider whether an app's functions are practical and simple, and whether its interface is clean and clear. It should also address specific problems that matter to users.
2. Use “Fake Doors” to Test Demand
To reach actual users, consider using “Fake Doors” or promotions such as “early access at a low price”. Analyse page views and their proportions to understand market trends and direction.
3. Attract Downloads with a Free App
Charging for an app can be enough to discourage downloads. A free app is more appealing, encouraging users to download it and explore what it offers.
4. Make Advertising Transparent
Too many advertisements and features that force users to take actions can easily reduce their interest. Make advertising as transparent as possible, for example by using the space below the interface without disrupting the user experience.
5. Keep Descriptions Concise and Compelling
To draw users' attention to your app among the many available, its description and screenshots must communicate its strengths concisely and convincingly. The description should explain how the app meets users' needs, while screenshots should use concrete examples to demonstrate its uses.
6. Encourage Sharing to Attract Users
If an app includes features that let friends participate, each user can expand their own social network, increasing the market the app can reach. App features can also connect to social networking sites to encourage wider sharing.
7. Avoid Overly Frequent Updates
Data shows that every time users are asked to update an app, user numbers invariably fall. If you want to improve features after launching an app, try to limit updates and avoid releasing them too close together.
